Leigh Wood has spoken out following today's weigh-in drama ahead of his title challenge against Mexican dangerman, Mauricio Lara.

Lara weighed in at 126.25lbs, 2.25lbs over the featherweight limit of 124lbs. He was given two hours to make the weight, but was unable to do so.

As a result, the fight has been cancelled.

Wood, who was due to defend his WBA featherweight title, has expressed his disappointment at the outcome.

"I'm gutted," he said. "I've been training for this fight for months and I was ready to put on a show for the fans.

"I'm not sure what happened with Lara, but I hope he's okay. I wish him all the best."

Wood's promoter, Matchroom Boxing, has said that they will be looking to reschedule the fight for later this year.

"We're disappointed that the fight couldn't go ahead today," said Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn. "But we're working hard to reschedule it for later this year.

"Leigh Wood is a world champion and he deserves to be fighting the best. We'll find him a new opponent and give him the chance to show the world what he's capable of."

The fight was due to take place at Nottingham Arena in Wood's hometown.

It would have been a rematch of their first fight in February 2022, which Wood won by a stunning 12th-round knockout.

Lara had been expected to pose a much sterner test in the rematch, but his failure to make weight has now scuppered those plans.

Wood will now have to wait until later this year to defend his title. But when he does, he will be looking to make a statement and prove that he is the best featherweight in the world.
